The scene depicts the Tarr & Wonson Paint Manufactory established in1863 in Gloucester, MA that made copper bottom paint for boats famous. It is a late summer afternoon day as the sun is bright and low in the sky. This has become a landmark image for Gloucester's working waterfront.
